The Art of Defense: Bringing Movement Defense to the Arts Sector

Grantmakers in the Arts

“The Art of Defense: Bringing Movement Defense to the Arts Sector” was organized by Rachel Herzing (Wellspring Philanthropic Fund) and co-presented by Rachel Herzing, Sonya Childress and Sahar Driver of Color Congress, and Yvonne Welbon, of Sisters in Cinema.

Within a context of political polarization and rising authoritarianism – artists of color, the arts organizations that support them, and the communities in which they live and work are increasingly confronting twin threats: lack of visibility from industry, philanthropy, and social justice movements, and hypervisibility from repressive forces. This session will discuss current threats faced by nonfiction filmmakers of color making work advancing social justice goals, and ideas about roles funders can play in preserving their safety and security, including guarding against de-funding.
